The Daily Show and Colbert Report to Leave Hulu

Viacom has failed to reach an agreement with Hulu and will be removing Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" from the streaming video web site. Instead, Hulu will redirect users to Comedy Central's web sites, TheDailyShow.com and ColbertNation.com beginning March 9. (Source: Advertising Age)

The Apple iPad

Today Apple introduced the long-rumored iPad tablet. Powered by Apple's own 1GHz "Apple A4" chip (developed by P.A. Semiconductor, which Apple acquired in 2008), the hand-held device features a 9.7-inch LED display, an on-screen keyboard, Wi-Fi and 3G data connectivity, a 10-hour battery, and an iPad version of the iWork suite (including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote available for $9.99 a piece). The .5-inch thick, 1.5-lbs. iPad can run all existing iPhone/iPod touch apps natively. (See full specifications)

The iPad is no doubt encroaching into Amazon's Kindle territory with the announcement of iBooks and the iBookstore.  There is still no Adobe Flash available for the iPad (same as with the iPhone and iPod touch), which means no watching Hulu (which makes sense, since it could potentially cannibalize TV episode sales through iTunes).

There is a keyboard accessory for those who prefer not to use the on-screen keyboard, and the iPad will even work with existing standard Bluetooth keyboards. 3G data rates through AT&T are $14.99 for 250MB (which you could burn through pretty quickly), or $29.99 for unlimited 3G data.

Pricing information on Apple's web site shows the following:

16 GB
32 GB
64 GB
Wi-Fi
$499
$599
$699
Wi-Fi + 3G
$629
$729
$829

There was so much hype and rumor mongering leading up to the announcement of the iPad, and now that it's here, how do you feel? I guess only time will tell whether the iPad becomes a wildly-popular device that finds application in many situations, or if it remains a niche product for a limited handful of users. Will you buy an iPad?

Buzzwords of 2009

Mark Leibovich and Grant Barrett wrote an interesting piece summarizing some of the interesting and entertaining buzzwords of 2009. Some of my favorites: aporkalypse, Dracula sneeze, "drive like a Cullen," Government Motors, and heinie. (Source: NYT)

My 5-Year-Old Son's Search History

My 5-year-old son is, to put it mildly, very interested in Super Mario Bros. and everything Nintendo. This evening, my wife noticed that he was poking around trying to search for Nintendo and Paper Mario (he had his Paper Mario diorama we made last week to remind him). I logged in to the kids' account and peeked at the history and found the following heart-warming entries that he had typed: "soprmoreobruthrs," and "papermario." It made me so proud, but also raised the urgency of the need to make sure we properly teach our children safe and smart Internet usage.

Paper Mario Diorama

Yesterday my son and I spent a few hours putting together a Paper Mario diorama. You can download the original source here. It was way more work than I was expecting, but it was fun.

Gentlemen Broncos

We're big fans of Napoleon Dynamite, and all things Jared Hess. My claim to fame is that I had classes with John Heder (Napoleon) and even had a film class with Jared Hess' wife Jerusha at BYU. The next hit from the Hess team is "Gentlemen Broncos" due out later this year. Fans of Flight of the Conchords will recognize Jemaine Clement as Dr. Ronald Chevalier. I am so stoked for this film! Hit up the trailer. Thanks Jeff for the link!

Priceline.com Quality Guarantee?

I'm searching for a hotel on Priceline.com and I read their "Quality Guarantee" which states, "If the hotel you purchase does not match our promise below, just call us before your check-in date and we'll change or cancel your hotel reservations at no charge." Alright. I'm just curious about how you would know that your hotel is sub-standard before your check-in date? If you get there, check in, get into bed, and there are scorpions in the bed, is it too late to change or cancel your hotel reservation at no charge? Sheesh!

Incipio, a Successful Company

Don't you love it when you have a good experience with a company? You're looking for something, and a business offers the exact item you want, at the exact price you are willing to pay. It feels great!

I have been trying to find a nice-fitting, nice-feeling cover for my iPod Touch ever since I got it about a year ago. I purchased a handful of inexpensive covers (6 total) over the last year from Case-Mate, and from a few eBay sellers. The covers either broke, or they did not fit my iPod at all. Why is it so hard to find a good, affordable case for iPod Touch / iPhone?

Then I found Incipio. I bought a black dermaSHOT silicone cover for my iPod Touch 1st generation for $4.99 (w/ free shipping). It fits perfectly, has a smooth feel to it, providing a durable, non-slip surface, but one that doesn't stick when you try to remove it from your pocket. The first one had a tear in the bottom left corner, but they quickly sent me a replacement without any heckling. Incipio has a wide array of nice covers for all types of gadgets including iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Zune, Nintendo DSi, Amazon Kindle, and MacBook.

Incipio is a private company headquartered in Irvine, CA with offices in Hong Kong and Tennessee, and distributors all over the world. Incipio does a fantastic job marketing their products and providing the customer service to back it up. Their product packaging is well-designed and even reminds one of Apple's product packaging "experience." Incipio's web site lets you shop by device and quickly find the product you need. Shipping is free and arrives promptly. Incipio is a company that is positioned for success. If you've got a gadget and you're looking for a quality cover or case, check out Incipio. Full disclosure: Incipio sent me some pamphlets and stickers when I told them I'd like to do a write-up on them.

What good gadget cases or covers have you found?

The Brain Science of Pornography Addiction

Regardless of one's moral or religious beliefs, the prolific saturation of pornography on the Internet and in the media cannot go unnoticed. It's no surprise that the availability of pornography is increasing, especially with an explosion of Internet-connected mobile devices and portable media players. Despite the economic hardships that many industries have suffered in recent years, the revenues of the pornography industry continue to grow. It is estimated that by 2013, the revenue from pornography on mobile devices alone will reach $4.9 billion. In the United States, the pornography industry annual revenues are estimated at approximately $13 billion, and over $97 billion worldwide, according to a 2006 statistic (obviously outdated), with the U.S. being one of the top producing countries.

What is it that makes consumers of pornography so addicted, and why does the porn industry continue to profit? Mark B. Kastleman, author of "The Drug of the New Millennium," says, "We need pleasure. We are pleasure-oriented beings." Exercise, music, certain foods, and other healthy activities can cause the release of neurotransmitters in the brain and give us pleasure. Just as a drug addict gets a surge of pleasure from taking illegal drugs, exposure to pornography produces an extreme chemical release of neurotransmitters in the brain. Some of these neurochemicals include dopamine (released with the same intensity as with cocaine use), norepinephrine (which causes the brain to remember the details of the exposure), oxytocin (which creates a powerful bonding with the viewer to the images), and seratonin (which creates a calming, peaceful feeling). In the same way that illegal drugs trick the brain into releasing its own endogenous chemicals, pornography fakes the brain into releasing a powerful cocktail of addicting, pleasurable neurotransmitters. Essentially, the addiction to pornography is not that different from actual chemical addiction. There is no ingesting or injecting of an actual substance, but viewing pornography can produce the same chemical release of neurotransmitters in the brain just as pharmaceutical or illegal drugs do. Jeffrey Satinover, M.S., M.D., Psychiatrist and Professor at Princeton University says, "modern science allows us to understand that the underlying nature of an addiction to pornography is chemically nearly identical to a heroin addiction: Only the delivery system is different, and the sequence of steps." Specialists who treat people with pornography addiction often say that it is harder to overcome a pornography addiction than a drug addiction because it involves many other complex emotions and situations, and because sexual attraction is built into our DNA.

What's more alarming are the psychological and behavioral impacts of pornography. Research indicates that consumption of pornography leads to adverse affects including increased marital distress, decreased marital intimacy and sexual satisfaction, infidelity, increased appetite for more graphic types of pornography and sexual activity associated with abusive, illegal or unsafe practices. Children who are exposed to pornography are at risk for developing sexual compulsions and addictive behavior, and face an increased risk of exposure to incorrect information about human sexuality long before a minor is able to contextualize this information in ways an adult brain could.

After repeated exposure to sexually explicit images, the brain habituates, or "gets bored," and the same images no longer cause the neurochemical release, according to Kastleman. Consequently, an individual will typically go to a more novel or disturbed level in order to get the same neurochemical release again. Kastleman mentions an interview with an FBI agent who handles child porn cases. The agent confirmed that in almost all of the cases that he sees, men usually start out by viewing "harmless" pornography, and after repeated use, the only thing that will give them the same level of pleasure is acting out against real people, or to view content that is more extreme, forbidden, or illegal. Kastleman cites research that links pornography use to child abuse, rape, incest, and sexual abuse.

Regardless of whether or not you think pornography is acceptable, today's technology allows us to see what happens chemically inside the brain during exposure, and to understand the reason behind the addictive nature of pornography. Anything that is as addictive has the potential to enslave individuals, affect their most critical relationships, and lead them to commit dangerous or illegal acts.

Bring Back My Equate Medicated Acne Gel!

Pardon the personal and embarrassing nature of this post. For years, I have used Equate: Medicated Acne Gel (10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Cream) which I purchase at Wal-Mart for about $1.86 and came in a 1 oz. tube with a pink label. For the last few months, I haven't been able to buy it at any Wal-Mart stores as it is always out of stock. After months of searching Wal-Mart stores, I found out that the product has been recalled due to a bacteria-tainted sample. Equate: Medicated Acne Gel, which is manufactured by CSI USA, Inc. of Gallatin, TN, and sold at Wal-Mart, Dollar General, and Kroger stores, was found to have the "Burkholderia Cepacia bacteria, which is also known as Pseudomonas Cepacia." Yikes! Apparently I'm not the only one who loves this product, and can't find it anymore. I'm glad CSI USA, Inc. has issued the recall on themselves, but I hope that they clean it up and get it back on the shelf soon before I get mistaken for a 13 year-old. (What? I have an oily T-zone, OK?)

Here is the content of the recall from the FDA's site:

  • I bought some name-brand stuff, but it wasn't the same, and didn't help.

  • I found a product called Zapzyt (nice name), that I'm going to try. It's a 10% Benzoyl Peroxide gel that could do quite well.

By Blogger Brian, at Mon Jul 06, 09:42:00 PM MDT

  • My husband went to 4 walmart stores trying to find the gel for me..Of course I was out of luck so I bought a name brand that not only doesn't work but, costs more and the tube was smaller..When are they bringing the Equate brand back? Has anyone else found something that works? Oxy brand does not work for me even though it has 10%bp...

By Blogger Brandi, at Fri Jul 10, 08:31:00 PM MDT

  • ok thanxx for this information because i was looking for their acne gel and coulndt find it. i thought it was just at the wal-mart i shop at, but apparently not. anywho its good they took it off the shelves, but it sucks too because this seems to be the only product that works for me[even tho i have to use it everyday], so i hope they bring it back soon!!
im already starting to break out again

By Anonymous Ne Ne, at Mon Aug 10, 10:31:00 PM MDT

  • I've had great luck with "Zapzyt". It's just as good, if not better than, the Equate acne gel. You can usually buy it at Wal-Mart in the same section. It's not as cheap as the Equate acne gel, but it certainly does the job!

By Blogger Brian, at Tue Aug 11, 07:33:00 AM MDT

  • OMG!!! YOU GUYS USE THE ACNE MEDICATED GEL TOO!!!! I HAVE USED IT FOREVER AND I LOVE IT. IT'S SO CHEAP AND IT WORKS WONDERS. I WOULD PUT IT ON EVERY NIGHT. I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND FOR A MONTHNOW. I DECIDED TO GOOGLE IT AND THOUGHT I MIGHT COULD ALSO GET IT AT WALMART.COM. LITTLE DID I KNOW IT HAD BEEN RECALLED!!!!! I'M SO GLAD I KNOW NOW. I HOPE THEY BRING I BACK AND DON'T DISCONTINUE IT. THEY'LL PROBALLY BRING IT BACK IN A WHOLE NEW PACKAGE AND GIE IT A WHOLE NEW LOOK. WE CAN ONLY WONDER. IF IT DOES COME BACK, I WILL BE STOCKING UP ON IT.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Mon Aug 24, 09:50:00 PM MDT

  • Thanks for the info. I have been searching for it in the stores everywhere for the last few months with no luck. I hope Wal-Mart brings the product back. It was the best for skin care!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sun Aug 30, 12:22:00 AM MDT

  • I've been wondering what happened to the gel for months. I asked in the store and the lady had no idea, even after checking with her scanner. My son and I use it a lot! I probably had 6 bottles at home when they were taken off the selves, and we are just now out. Our local kmart has what seems like the identical product for $3.28. On the bottle it says made for kmart, so I'm not sure who manufactures it. Also, isn't benzoyl peroxide supposed to kill bacteria. I wonder what harm that bacteria does and is/was there any danger using the bottles we had already purchased. I never saw any notice at Wal Mart. Thank you for posting this info.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Thu Sep 03, 10:35:00 PM MDT

  • Yeah, $1.86. I too depended on the stuff for years. I hope those wonderful days return. So far, I paid around $5.00 at Walmart for the "AcneFree Acne and Blackhead Terminator" and have had about 5 zits when I wasn't having any with the cheap Equate stuff. I'll probably try the Zapzyt next, but I sure Walmart gets the old stuff back. Thanks for info.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Mon Sep 07, 12:34:00 AM MDT

  • I went to Wallyworld today and bought 4 boxes - they're $1.97 now, but still a bargain. They're back!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tue Sep 08, 11:33:00 PM MDT

  • no wonder i didn't find it at wal-mart
why do they discontinue the stuff the actually works!?

BRING THE EQUATE ACNE GEL BACK!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Wed Sep 09, 11:04:00 PM MDT

  • wow, what a small world! I have been looking for the equate brand for months now and have been paying almost 6 bucks for a ( now ) smaller tube of the name brand oxy which doesnt work near as good as the much cheaper equate. Hoping its back around here soon.

Listen to Live Scanner Feeds Free on iPhone

Just a little tip here. In my previous post, I mentioned the Emergency Radio app for iPhone/iPod Touch. If you want to scan police, fire, and EMS action in your area, but don't want to pay $1 for the full version of Emergency Radio, you can visit the mobile version of RadioReference.com. You must have iPhone OS version 3.0 in order to listen.

Emergency Radio iPhone App Lets You Monitor Police, Fire, EMS Without a Radio Scanner

When I turned 13 years old, I got a CB (Citizen's Band) radio for my birthday. It was my first hands-on experience with radio communications (other than toy "walkie-talkies"), and since then I have been a radio fanatic. My radio hobbies have evolved over the years from CB radio to scanning/monitoring (I currently own a Uniden BCD-396XT) and later into amateur radio and shortwave monitoring. You can imagine my excitement when I learned about the iPhone/iPod Touch app Emergency Radio by EdgeRift, which allows you to tune in to live radio scanner feeds (police, fire and EMS) from all over the country. Emergency Radio pulls the live streams from ScanAmerica (Now part of RadioReference). While you can already listen to the feeds on RadioReference, having a slick and portable interface on the iPhone/iPod Touch is very handy and can be very useful especially if you are visiting a city and you want to find out what's going on.

The free version, Emergency Radio Lite, lets you listen to Chicago, Denver, Miami, New Orleans, and San Jose, while the full version provides access to over 1,000 frequencies. There are a handful of radio scanner apps available, but Emergency Radio has the highest rating (3.5/5 as of today). (Sources: Emergency Radio, Macworld)

Communication and Poor Translation

I'm currently enrolled in a Global Management course as part of my MBA curriculum. We are learning about the importance of communication across cultures. I found the following excerpt from an assigned reading entertaining:
...Remember that grammar is complex and the seemingly slight misuse (or even placement) of a word can change the meaning of an utterance substantially. All of the following, each originally composed to assist English-speaking guests, have appeared on signs in hotels around the world:

FRANCE: “Please leave your values at the desk.”
MEXICO (to assure guests about the safety of drinking water): “The manager has
personally passed all the water served here.”
JAPAN: “You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid.”
NORWAY: “Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar.”
SWITZERLAND: “Because of the impropriety of entertaining guests of the opposite sex in the bedroom, it is suggested that the lobby be used for this purpose.”
GREECE (at check-in line): “We will execute customers in strict rotation.”

(International Business Environments and Operations, 12th Edition (2009), Daniels, Radebaugh, and Sullivan, p. 73)

TurboTax Online "Temporarily Unavailable"

I decided to use TurboTax Online to process my tax return this year. Last night when I tried to log in to complete my return, I got the message, "TurboTax Online is temporarily unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that you check back with us shortly." When I checked back again this morning, I got the same message. Has anyone else seen this message when trying to access TurboTax Online? "The cloud" has failed me!

I understand that you are unable to switch your deduction to itemize.

You can itemize your deduction through the deduction and credits section. The program however will chose the standard deduction as your deduction type unless your itemized deductions is higher than your standard deduction. So continue to complete your itemize deduction and it will pick which deduction type will maximize and give you a greater deduction.

  • Julie from TurboTax here. Yesterday, we had some persisting network issues that caused TurboTax Online to be either intermittently unavailable or slow. We're up & running now, though so give it a try! Want to apologize for the delay and frustration! We appreciate your patience.

Pot farm found on Google Earth

While using Google Earth, Swiss authorities located a two-acre marijuana plantation hidden within a corn field. The discovery led to the arrest of 16 people and the seizure of 1.2 tons of marijuana. You can't hide from Google Earth!

If you love Boggle and you have an iPhone or iPod touch, check out Quordy. It's one of the few iPhone/iPod touch apps I've actually paid for, and it's one of my favorites. I'm a Boggle fiend, so I was stoked to find this $3 app.

Levis Sells the Sexuality of America's Youth

I am very concerned about a Levis television commercial I saw last night (11/20/08) on NBC during The Office. A young man and young woman in their teens are taking off their clothes saying things such as, “It’s my first time,” clearly preparing to have sex. The commercial explicitly reveals these two teens in their underwear, and eventually shows them jumping off a dock into the water.

As an artistic person having worked on television commercials, I can appreciate the creativity that went into this spot; however, I am deeply troubled at the message it sends to the children, particularly the teenagers in our country. My young children are usually in bed by the time I watch The Office, but I would hate for any of my children to see this advertisement, and then go away with the understanding that it is OK for unwed teenagers to have sex, which is clearly the message this commercial is sending, not to mention that its explicit content borders on child pornography. It’s a shame that Levi Strauss & Co. seems to think it is necessary to resort to such base methods as selling the sexuality of our great nation’s youth in order to market its timeless products.

Write to Levi Strauss & Co. and let them know what you think:

  • I'm boycotting Levi's - not wearing pants. That'll show 'em.

  • Brian, you inadvertently endorsed the very product you're blogging against. The site gives context-based ads by Google, and so the side of your page is plastered with Levis ads.

It reminds me of this time Glenn Beck was on a diatribe against Mormon apostates who were fighting against the church and the ads all around the page were for anti-Mormon propaganda.

It's one of those unfortunate side effects of the internet.

  • I know! It's ironic. I noticed the contextual Levi's ads on the right-hand pane as well. (sigh)

Performance Feedback on the Job

"The most frequent complaint of all individuals about their jobs is that they rarely are told when they are performing well. Except for the annual performance-appraisal ritual, performance is discussed only when problems arise.

"Making recognition a formal part of the system reminds managers that reinforcing good performance is just as important as confronting poor performance. It also makes employees aware of the organization's expectations that they will be recognized when they perform well." (Discipline Without Punishment. By: Grote, Dick, Across the Board, 01471554, Sep/Oct2001, Vol. 38, Issue 5)

I believe this principle applies to our personal lives as well as on the job. When did you last take time to complement someone in your family or in your workplace for a job well done?

Effective Management

I read a wonderful article from the Harvard Business Review called, "Reclaim Your Job" by Sumantra Ghoshal and Heike Bruch. Something really stood out to me about leadership: "When managers complain about lack of time and resources, they’re really expressing their fear of taking action." In order for managers to be more effective and operate independently, they must learn to:
  1. Manage demands
  2. Generate resources
  3. Recognize and exploit alternatives
The authors gives examples of managers that have demonstrated each of these principles and achieved success. You can only view the entire article if you have a subscription, but you can read a little of the article on the Harvard Business Review site.

Use OpenDNS to Protect Your Family Online

Every computer on the Internet has a numerical IP address (for example, 74.125.47.99). In order to make it easier to access other computers on the Internet, we use what is called DNS (Domain Name System) to translate www.google.com into its numerical IP address: 74.125.47.99. You may be asking, "That's great, but how can I use DNS to make web browsing on my family computer safer for my family?"

OpenDNS is a free service that you can use to block certain categories of web sites (for example pornographic, explicit, phishing, or other dangerous sites) for all computers on your home network. OpenDNS has great documentation on how to set it up here. But, if you're already well acquainted with networking, simply use 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 as your primary and secondary DNS servers. Then, create a free account with OpenDNS and follow the instructions for enabling content filtering. There is also a helpful guide here. (Sources: OpenDNS, The How-To Geek)

Contra Code Easter Egg in Google Reader

What does the sequence UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A... mean to you? If you're an old-school Nintendo kid, you'll remember that code from the game Contra. Well, try entering that code while logged in to Google Reader and you'll see a ninja background in your feeds list and all unread items set to 30, which is the number of extra lives you get in Contra when entering the code. When you sign out or re-enter the key sequence, it will go away. I wonder what other Google easter eggs are hiding out there. (Source: DS Fanboy)

In praise of what's inside the diapers

Science fiction and non-fiction writer Orson Scott Card wrote an excellent article in the Deseret News about raising children, and about the great privilege and honor it is to be a parent, especially for men. He writes, "My boy-children loved being tossed in the air — not far, but enough that they felt that moment of weightlessness at the top of the toss. I learned, however, that this should not take place immediately after the baby has nursed." (Source: Deseret News)

Truth Restored

In a departure from the normal topics I regularly post here, I'd like to take a moment to share my deepest convictions and bear testimony of those things which give me guidance and happiness. In this age of instant and abundant information, I would be selfish and foolish not to share the most valuable knowledge I have gained.

God lives, and is our loving Heavenly Father. He cares about us, His children, and has a plan for our eternal happiness. He sent his son, Jesus Christ, to earth to teach by example, and to carry out the atonement, which makes it possible for us to repent and return to God's presence.

God has called prophets in these days, just as He has done from the beginning of time. Joseph Smith is the first prophet of these latter days in which we live. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the Lord's kingdom on the earth, and is led by Christ through a prophet and apostles, just as it was while he was on the earth. Thomas S. Monson is the prophet who leads the Church today, under the direction of Jesus Christ.

The Book of Mormon is the word of God and has been brought forth by the power of God to stand as an additional witness of Jesus Christ, alongside the Holy Bible. How thankful I am that the Lord cares so much for each one of us, and that He knows all of our struggles and deepest trials! He is willing to bless us and help us to overcome. This knowledge gives me and my family great joy. I know that these things are true by the power of the Holy Ghost, which I have felt in my heart, and which testifies of truth.

"We don’t ask any people to throw away any good they have got; we only ask them to come and get more. What if all the world should embrace this Gospel? They would then see eye to eye, and the blessings of God would be poured out upon the people, which is the desire of my whole soul."

"Thousands who have heard the Gospel have become obedient thereto, and are rejoicing in its gifts and blessings. Prejudice, with its attendant train of evil, is giving way before the force of truth, whose benign rays are penetrating the nations afar off. … The time was, when we were looked upon as deceivers, and that ‘Mormonism’ would soon pass away, come to naught, and be forgotten. But the time has gone by when it is looked upon as a transient matter, or a bubble on the wave, and it is now taking a deep hold in the hearts and affections of all those who are noble-minded enough to lay aside the prejudice of education, and investigate the subject with candor and honesty." (Joseph Smith)

I would like to invite all who read this to come unto Christ, to learn of Him, and of our Heavenly Father, and to read His words and obey His commandments.

Huge Blue Screen Error in Vegas

I don't know what it is about public blue screens of death, but I am oddly attracted to them. Perhaps it's because I can sympathize with the poor systems admin who gets that dreaded phone call saying that the display is jacked up again. They're both funny and sad at the same time. This just in: Clowns are Scary!

According to a study of 250 children by the University of Sheffield in Britain, clowns are scary. "Every single young patient disapproved of using clowns to cheer them up. The big painted smile didn't persuade them, and even some of the older kids found them scary." (Source: NPR)

  • In Kindermusik today, the teacher used an old fashioned jack-in-the-box as part of the lesson. When it popped up, one of the girls totally freaked out. So the teacher put it up high and out of the way. Then, in the middle of singing a song, the jack-in-the-box popped open all by itself. Freaky! That was it for the little girl. The teacher had to take it to another part of the house. The girl was in hysterics by the time her mom got there. Clowns ARE scary!

Hulu: I'm in!

I finally got an invite to the private beta of the new video site Hulu (Thanks TechCrunch!). While there may not be a lot of anything worth while on television nowadays, Hulu is still fun to use, and gives you more control of what you want to watch.

Hulu features some limited HD content which looks pretty good (using the latest Flash Player 9.0.115), and you can expect the HD offerings to increase in the future.

One cool feature on Hulu is the ability to embed and share clips on your blog or with friends via e-mail. You can even select a customized chunk of a particular video to share. The social networking aspect of Hulu is evident when you view your profile, which shows your public playlist and your history (both of which can be viewed via RSS).

Here's an embed straight from Hulu:

Massive BSOD

This could be perhaps the largest Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)! I sure don't envy the systems administrator in charge of that machine! "Uuh, Bob, we've got a problem with the display; I don't think it's supposed to be showing 'STOP ERROR 0x0000007E.'"

Star Wars Kid

This kid totally rips it up with his fake light saber. I'm not sure what the story behind this video is, but it's pretty hilarious. Doesn't every boy have a deep, burning desire to bust out a light saber and throw down some elite Jedi moves?
